Hi Boulware,

It's March Madness time! This year, we are going to have a Boulware Community ESPN Bracket competition. The winner will receive a gift card to the Java House! Even if you don't know anything about college basketball (cause I sure don't...), you can still fill out the bracket because each team is ranked! For example, a team ranked #10 may play a team ranked #6- if you have no idea what the teams are, you can just go with or go against the odds and hope for some great guessing :) We would love for all of Boulware to get involved!!

Here's how it works:

1) Log on to:

2) Sign up for an ESPN account or log in through facebook. Then join "Boulware Community CCOM" to get into the competition.

3) National Bracket Day is on March 14 (Monday) so that is a great day to fill out your bracket. The website should be pretty self explanatory but if you have any issues, email me! The bracket with the ranked teams should come up when you are able to fill it out. The day is designated to celebrate the upcoming NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship and urge fans to fill out their brackets before the first round of the tournament begins on March 15 (Tuesday).

4) Then just sit back and watch as your teams win and ESPN keeps track of who is winning in our group! Don't forget- the winner gets a prize woo!

So bring out your competitive spirit and sign up on espn.com! We would love a huge group to make it a fun, friendly competition as we all cheer on our teams :)

First prize: $1500
Second prize: $750
Deadline for entry: May 6, 2011
Prizes awarded: mid-June, 2011

An annual $1,500 first prize and $750 second prize will be awarded to the best essays that examine a timely issue in medicine using historical, ethical and cultural perspectives. This competition is open to all medical students enrolled in the UI Carver College of Medicine. An outstanding essay will be an original work based on sound research in the relevant fields and sources, including (as appropriate) primary documents, peer-reviewed academic books and articles, and published essays and commentaries. Essays will be judged on their originality, organization, clarity of theme and presentation. Essays should be 2500-3500 words in length, double spaced with 1-inch margins in a 12 point font (approximately 12 to 15 pages).

Instructions to students for the Proposal section:

Before writing your proposal, carefully read the description and requirements of the Humanities Distinction Track. In your Proposal, be sure to address the following areas of importance:

1. The specific nature and aim of the scholarship in ethics, writing, or humanities you propose to pursue, and what form yourscholarly work will take when completed (i.e., the finished 'product' you plan to have).

2. The name of your mentor, how frequently you plan to meet with your mentor, and what role you expect your mentor will play inyour work.

3. The amount of time you will devote to your scholarly efforts and when/how this time will be distributed during each of the remaining years of your medical school schedule (be specific, including mention of special periods of concentrated work).

4. The elective activities you plan to pursue in the M2 and M4 years (in addition to your scholarly work).

5. How your efforts will fulfill the three objectives of the Humanities Distinction Track, which are:

(a) To support and recognize students who make scholarly or creative contributions in the medical humanities.

(b) To prepare students to integrate the medical humanities into their medical careers.

Attention: An exciting opportunity for all Neurology Interest Group Members:

To all students considering neurology as a career

I have invited Hal Blumenfeld, MD, PhD to come give Neurology Grand Rounds on Thurs 3/31 at noon. He is Professor of Neurology at Yale University and the author of the best selling neuroanatomy text "Neuroanatomy through Clinical Cases." He was also the faculty leader of the SIGN group at Yale for many years, and is a very nice guy. He has trained many medical students who have gone into neurology.

I would like to know whether there is interest in an informal dinner and discussion session at my house for SIGN members, MSTP students in neuroscience, and any other students considering neurology. It would be held in the evening on Wed 3/30. Hal would be able to talk about his perspectives on neurology as a career, how to apply, and which programs are good. He can also answer any questions you have.

[MEDIQS] Get Acquainted Day

Hi everyone,

Each spring the College of Medicine holds a Get Acquainted Day (This year, Saturday April 9) for accepted medical students to visit campus and get an early introduction to medical school. As part of this process there are a couple opportunities for our group to be involved.

For medical students:
1) We can provide a list of students willing to be contacted via email to answer questions about medical school and personal life in Iowa City, let me know if you would like to be listed

2) As part of the events there are two panel sessions, one from 9:30 - 10, and another from 11:15 - 11:45. In both of these sessions there is a panel on "Relationships in Medical School" and "Student Life." The first focuses mostly on life / school balance while the other is to focus on recreational activities and student groups. I certainly think we should have a representative at these sessions. If you are interested and available for one or both time slots please let me know and let me know if you have a preferred panel to participate on.

For faculty members & residents:
1) As part of the information we include in the packet I think it would be nice to include some faculty names as well as some community resources. If you are interested in being included as a potential contact for students please let me know.

Lastly, for the other members, please touch base with the individuals in charge of recruitment for your various programs. See if there are any similar events in which we might provide a list of on-campus contacts and resources. I will be happy to help in putting together information.

Hello McCowenites !

Just incase you weren't listening, weren't there, or were a little preoccupied with immuno here are the updates that we flew threw at the lunch meeting on Tuesday + a few extras that you may want to know about:

1. McCowen got 1st place, followed by flocks, boulware , bean at the DVIP bench press- WAY TO GO!

2. we are looking for a M1 to help with the leadership banquet (march 22) in hopes that they will provide assistance to the leadership members/be one of the members who plan the event next year. Please contact allison-boardman@uiowa.edu by Friday at 5pm if you are interested. (sorry for the short notice, we know you have HOS , but we need to have somebody designated before spring break)

3. Doc Dash (the next Olympic event) is coming up on April 2nd. Early registration for $20 ends on March 19th (the second Saturday of spring break). So if you are going out of town for spring break and think you want to participate turn your gold form in ASAP! After that the prices to up to $25 and then $30. You can register online but there is a $2 charge.... so moral of the story TURN IN YOUR GOLD FORM ASAP :)

Random information about Doc Dash:

Scoring: 1 point for each participant and 1 point for each volunteer
SO while we encourage you all to participate by running/walking in the race, if you are unable to do so for financial or physical reasons please consider volunteering- even if they have enough volunteers we will still receive points if you attempt to do so. If you want to volunteer instead of run please contact elizabeth-pitts@uiowa.edu by march 19th.
Also Doc Dash is a family and pet friendly event! Kids 14 and under are free, but can only be counted toward community participation if they are registered and paid for (they get the early registration rate no matter when they register).
If you want to save money you can always save $5 by not getting a shirt

Leadership Positions

1.      Mayor- The mayor is in charge of running the Boulware meetings on the second Tuesday of every month. Also, on the first Tuesday of every month, the mayor will attend a lunch meeting with other community mayors, faculty and staff. The fourth Tuesday of every month is reserved for a lunch meeting that the mayor runs with the rest of the Boulware Leadership Committee. Finally, on one Tuesday night every month the mayor attends a one-hour meeting with other members of the CCOM Student Government. Overall, the mayor's job is to make sure that everything that is happening in the community is running smoothly and coordinating events with all the other Leadership Chairs in the community.
2.      Secretary- The Boulware secretary's primary job is maintaining the Boulware board by updating it with announcements and games. The secretary should also make himself/herself willing to help out with the other Boulware leaders with their various tasks.

3.      Community Service Co-Chairs- The role in this position is to plan community-wide service opportunities. The main focuses this year were Table to Table, Adopt-A-Family, and a fall and spring blood drive. Table to Table occurs Saturday mornings May-October. Major responsibilities include training interested individuals as well as ensuring each Saturday shift is covered. This winter's event was Adopt-a-Family through the Cedar Rapids Olivet Neighborhood Mission. Other holiday events have included gathering items for The Nest of Johnson County, an education program for maternal/infant resources. Blood drives are coordinated with help from the DeGowen Blood center. In the past, this leadership role has been co-chaired. This helps with planning and coordinating events as well as generating service ideas for the community.
4.      Activity Co-Chairs- The activity chairs are responsible for planning Friendly Fridays and other community activities. The activity chairs will line up speakers or events during monthly meetings when there is available time in the meeting.
5.      Treasurer- The main role of Boulware's treasurer is to make sure that we have an updated breakdown of the budget. The treasurer must also attend leadership meetings and be flexible in doing other duties if necessary.
6.      Advocacy- The Advocacy Committee Chair represents Boulware at the monthly Advocacy Committee meetings. Our projects are always changing based on the feedback we receive from students, for example, we are currently finalizing our review over the UI student health insurance policy as it compares to the policies of the other Big Ten schools.

A few dates that should try to be kept open by those interested in running for a Leadership position include Saturday, April 9th 2011 (Get Acquainted Day for the new M1s), and the week prior to the start of school in August 2010 (Orientation Week).

The Betty Ford Institute's Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS) gives medical students an in-depth learning experience with the dynamics of the disease of addiction. During the week-long session, students learn about this disease from the perspective of the patient or family member. Supplementing this experience with the education provided by our physicians and treatment experts enables the student to view addiction to alcohol and other drugs from an entirely unique perspective.

The SIMS program is offered at no cost to the selected students, including travel and accommodations. We are located in the beautiful Palm Springs area. The costs of the program are underwritten by philanthropic support. To be considered, students must complete an online application and provide letters of recommendation.

This April we have a special opportunity: The reigning Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, Paul Harding, will be the featured speaker at the Examined Life Conference. Leading up to the conference, the Writing and Humanities Program and the CCOM Communities are organizing the inaugural CCOM Reads event. Followup Information about Scheduling M3 Clinical Training in Des Moines in 2011-2012

Dear M2 Class Members:

At yesterday's class meeting to discuss your M3 clinical training, I shared that there is an opportunity for up to 24 students to complete all of the required third-year rotations in Des Moines (40-44 weeks out of the 48 weeks) and also an opportunity for students to complete other individual rotations in Des Moines during the year in most of the required disciplines.

I did want to emphasize two important points for you to consider:

1. There is a lunch meeting to discuss the M3 clinical training year in Des Moines option this Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm in Room 2189 in the MERF Building. I will be present and will provide a brief video tour and discussion about the year in Des Moines. I will also have several current M3 students who are completing their M3 year in Des Moines present to share their observations and to answer any questions you may have about Des Moines clinical training. Current M3 students Austin Baeth & Genevieve Staudt who were present at yesterday's class meeting felt bad that they were not asked to share how & why they chose to spend the year in Des Moines and how glad they are that they chose this option.

2. If you are interested in completing the M3 year in Des Moines in 2011-2012, please remember to see Marcia Hopp in the OSAC office. She will provide you the separate scheduling form you need to complete to indicate your interest in this option and she will answer questions & assist you with any questions you have about scheduling this option.

The lunch meeting this Thursday is open to anyone who has questions about the Des Moines training option. Even if you came on the earlier bus trip to Des Moines, if you have any other questions about the year in Des Moines, you are welcome to join us. We will serve lunch at the meeting so we need to get an accurate head count of those who wish to attend the lunch meeting. Please RSVP to Consortium secretary Wendi Kruger TODAY either by email (krugerwl@ihs.org) or by phone (515-241-4455) if you would like to attend the lunch meeting.

The Iowa Medical Society has generously agreed to assist in the funding of Global Programs electives again this year. Applications from M3's for electives to be taken in their M4 year should be submitted to the addresses below by April 29. Good Luck!

IMS Education Fund Clinical Experience

The IMS Education Fund considers funding requests if they relate to one of the following:

1. Health education, promotion, and/or wellness programs.

2. Medical education or scientific programs sponsored by recognized specialty or public health organizations.

3. Activities which enhance the delivery of quality health care in Iowa.

4. Programs or activities which enhance the image of medicine and the career path of medicine.

Funding requests for clinical experiences fall within these broad guidelines and will be considered if they meet the following specific guidelines:

1. The student must be a junior medical student.

2. Clinical experiences will be in medically underserved areas, preferably in another country.

3. Students must be directed and supervised by a health care provider having extensive knowledge and expertise in the area and a formal tie with the organization or institution where the clinical experience will be undertaken.

4. Clinical experiences need to be arranged through and approved for credit by Carver College of Medicine Global Programs Director.

5. Clinical experiences are to be taken during the student's senior year and must be completed prior to graduation.

6. Requests for funding must include: a.) the student's goals for the clinical experience; b.) a plan to achieve these goals; c.) a plan to evaluate the experience; d.) description of language and cultural preparation for the experience; e.) a budget for living expenses, travel and other project related costs including any other source of funds which will be received; f.) the name of the student's sponsor with information on their credentials.

7. Requests for funding must be submitted by April 29 of the student's junior year.

8. Students are required to submit a written report to the IMS Education Fund upon completion of their clinical experience.

Students may apply for up to $1,000.

Doc Dash 5k run/walk

The Doc Dash is approaching!

The Doc Dash is a 5k fun run/walk in and around the health sciences campus and the University of Iowa. It will be held April 2, 2011, starting at 9:00 am. The event benefits the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic and the College of Medicine Mobile Clinic. The event is open to all members of the community and their families.

Start and finish are at MERF, 375 Newton Road. Parking is available immediately across the street.

Registration is $20 if completed by March 19th, $25 March 19 through race day, and $30 on race day. This includes registration, race number, and t-shirt. You may subtract $5 if you do not wish to have a shirt. Shirts can only be guaranteed if registration is completed by March 19. Children 14 and under are free.

Medals will be awarded to winners, and trophies awarded for best CCOM community participation and UIHC department participation (physicians and support staff alike!).

Registration can be completed by visiting active.com (search for Doc Dash), or via paper registrations now available in all student mailboxes or in the Flocks community office (1150A MERF).

The Good Books for Africa program will be coming to MERF on FRIDAY MARCH 11. They accept all books in good condition, NOT JUST TEXT BOOKS!

They do not accept journals, periodicals, custom course manuals (i.e. FCP syllabus), magazines or encyclopedia sets.

Drop off your used books in Boulware between March 2 - March 11. There will be a box near the mailboxes to put them in.

Alpha Omega Alpha's Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award is presented annually to recognize a community physician who contributes with distinction to the education and training of clinical students. The nominees must be a a community physician, not on the full-time or part-time faculty, who effectively and generously donates his or her time, skill, and experience to teach you clinical skills. Boulware space

As you all know Match Day is on the way and it is during the spring break. For this reason we should try and clean up Boulware space before we go on break and make it look the way it is supposed to look (nice and clean), so we can make a good impression on fellow students and their families or any visitors that come by.

I will set up the table outside of Boulware tonight/tomorrow and put out all the things that should not be in Boulware. As you go home tomorrow please try to stop by and take anything that's yours. Also, we have a few bags on the floor under the stairs now that belong to other student groups and should not be stored in the Boulware community. Anything that is not taken care of by Thursday of next week we will throw or give away.

Also, please make sure that you take anything that's yours from the fridge before you leave for spring break, so it can also be cleaned out.

First and foremost- THANK YOU to everybody who helped out at DVIP Bench Press. The event was a huge success because of your efforts and there is no way this event could have happened without your help. We can't tell you enough how much we appreciate your help and support at the event. THANK YOU- THANK YOU- THANK YOU!

Secondly- CONGRATULATIONS on winning your first Olympic event! The results are not official but so far its looking like we blew our competition out of the water. Way to show up and represent!

[MEDIQS] Social Follow-up

Many thanks to all who attended and to the Office of Cultural Affairs and Diversity Initiatives for their wonderful support. We had another great afternoon social and I wanted to provide just a quick summary and follow-up on some of the conversation.

I think one of the big take away messages from the past afternoon is that an important goal of this group is to ensure that there is a welcoming atmosphere for GLBT individuals (patients, students, staff, faculty) across all of the allied health specialties on our campus. To that end we have the following plans / goals:

1) We will continue to hold a monthly afternoon social, it will be the first week of the month, although we will rotate between Tuesdays and Wednesday to provide some flexibility for differing class / clinic schedules.

2) We will also work with the Outlaws (Law school GLBT student group) and other organizations about town to consider some evening/weekend activities. I will try to see what I can arrange for sometime in April

3) For the past two years the Office of Cultural Affairs and MEDIQS have hosted a fall welcoming event that included medical students, public health students and law students. We will have this event again in the fall and work to incorporate other allied health students as well as staff and faculty.

4) This assignment is for everyone:
We think its important to help new/prospective students and employees recognize there is an organization for them and a generally welcoming environment. So we would like to start working with various departments to understand how we might meet these goals. Some thoughts that were discussed was participation in or contribution to orientation events as well as working to be identified on web sites. To help achieve this goal we need everyone to think about their own areas, how recruitment and orientation is handled and the best way to start to create some appropriate visibility. If any good opportunities are identified, take the initiative to start the process and let myself and the group know of any ways we can help.

Hello!

This is a reminder to submit your M4 schedule request by the end of the day tomorrow Friday, March 4.

Enter your schedule request on the website at:

If the edit feature is not working for you, be sure to use Internet Explorer.

You do not need to submit a full M4 schedule at this time.

You do need to include all remaining required clerkships (2 weekers and Neuro or Psych).

Refer to the blue instruction sheet for further details.

For Individually Arranged Electives including Research and Global, refer to #4 on the blue instruction sheet.

For adding a COC, refer to #7 on the blue instruction sheet.

There is no right or wrong way to enter your schedule request. Everyone has different needs and priorities. Keep in mind that this is your initial schedule. I will work with you on changing your schedule as needed throughout the year.

Schedule changes (adds and drops) are allowed as long as they are done at least FOUR weeks in advance of the clerkship start date. All schedule changes are done through Marcia Hopp – do not go the departments for schedule changes.

M1's interested in working at the medical student bookstore; meeting March 10

It's the time of year to arrange Medical Student Bookstore workers for next year. If you are interested in working at the Medical Student Bookstore in the MERF Atrium next year, please meet me in front of the bookstore on Thursday, March 10 at 12:30 pm. The meeting should not take longer than 20 minutes. \
NOTE: showing up for this meeting does not commit you to working next year, it just provides an opportunity to get information. Generally, the responsibilities of a medical student bookstore worker are:
-work 1 or 2, 1 hour shifts at the bookstore each week
-occassionally pick up books from the loading dock and bring them to the bookstore
-compensation is $8/hour

M3 Orientation panel recruitment

Remember the "Making the Most of Your M3 Year" session during Clinical Beginnings last year? (It was the one where you got the little Maxwell and Pharmacopeia books and everyone was asking nervous questions) We're looking for about 20 current M3s to help lead this year's sessions.

The logistics will be about the same (groups of about 15 students for about 1.5 hours) and will take place June 20 - 23. We'd like to make this session even more valuable to the rising M3s, so if you're interested in helping this year, email a quick list of the what you think are the 5 most important things every rising M3 should know and your availability during that week to melanie-meister@uiowa.edu. If you have any questions, you can email Melanie or Dylan at dylan-murray@uiowa.edu.

Here is the schedule of events for your upcoming Match Week:

1) Monday March 14 at 10:30 AM in the MERF Auditorium: class meeting

Topics will include:

voting on Commencement speaker
voting on your class oath
class announcements -and-
you will receive an envelope telling you whether or not you matched

The meeting will end at about 11:30 am. If you are not be able to attend this meeting or the Match Day events on Thursday and would like your envelope given to someone else, please contact Annette Griffin to provide that authorization.

2) Thursday, March 17: Match Day! **Your family and friends are invited.**

10:30 AM: The Match Day Celebration begins at 10:30 am in the MERF Atrium
11:00 AM: Envelopes with Match destination will be distributed through the random "dollar draw"

** The traditional dollar method involves giving a dollar when receiving your letter. The final person to receive his/her letter will receive all of the money given by previous students.**
11:30 AM: Lunch in the Atrium– the ever-popular fajita bar catered by Gringo's. Also at this time, a Match slide show that we put together will be running in the Aud (REMINDER: No food or drink).
1:00 PM: Move to the Auditorium for the "Most likely to…" awards and senior slide show
2:00 PM: Estimated time the festivities will conclude

Clerkship directors have been asked to excuse you to attend the class meeting on Monday and to attend the Match Day activities beginning at 10:30 am on Thursday. If you are asking off for more than these hours, please submit a formal time off request through the time off system. You are expected to return to your usual clerkship schedule on Friday, March 18.

Credit Score Workshop

The popular Credit Scoring Seminar has been rescheduled for Monday, April 18 at 5:30 in room 1117. Those who RSVP and fill out form will receive a free meal AND a free credit report including credit score (FICO score). Experienced staff from UI Credit Union will tell you what goes into the FICO scoring model, define the range of scores so you can determine where yours falls and how that will affect you (i.e. your ability to borrow money and possibly your car insurance rate, your ability to rent a home and many other facets of your life in commerce). They'll also tell you how to keep your credit good or repair credit that's less than what you want it to be and they'll help you understand your own credit report. This is a really good session that everyone needs; it's an opportunity you shouldn't miss to become informed on this topic.

You need to complete the attached RSVP form which also gives your consent to have your credit report pulled. You'll receive your credit report at the seminar. Please open the form, fill it out, save it and then email it back to brenda-vandee@uiowa.edu with CREDIT REPORT in the subject line. Deadline for emailing the consent RSVP is end of the day Thursday April 14. Please submit this form even if you sent us one last fall when the workshop was originally scheduled.

Donate Old Books to Africa

DONATE TO A GOOD CAUSE!!

Your unwanted books can help provide much-needed materials to libraries and classrooms in Africa.

The Good Books for Africa program will be coming to MERF on FRIDAY MARCH 11. They accept all books in good condition, NOT JUST TEXT BOOKS!

They do not accept journals, periodicals, custom course manuals (i.e. FCP syllabus), magazines or encyclopedia sets.

Drop off your used books in Boulware between March 2 - March 11. There will be a box near the mailboxes to put them in.

18th Carol A. Bowman Creative Writing Contest for Medical Students

The Writing and Humanities Program is pleased to announce this creative writing contest for medical students. Entries may be of any length or literary genre (fiction, essay, poetry, drama, memoir). The purpose of the contest is to stimulate student writing and thoughtful expression of the many and new experiences students encounter while in medical school.

Lunch Meeting about Des Moines M3 Clinical Training Options in 2011-2012

Dear M2 Class Members:

As you know, there is a class meeting on Monday March 7, 2011 to discuss scheduling for your M3 clinical training. I will be attending the meeting and will present information about Des Moines clinical training options during the 2011-2012 academic year. There is an opportunity for up to 24 students to complete all of the required third-year rotations in Des Moines (40 weeks out of the 48 weeks) and also an opportunity for students to complete other individual rotations in Des Moines during the year in most of the required disciplines.

We sponsored a bus trip to Des Moines in early February so students interested in completing the 2011-2012 clinical training year in Des Moines could visit the campus and meet with current students, faculty and staff. A number of students expressed that they were interested in the Des Moines training year but were not able to participate in the bus trip that day. We are sponsoring a lunch for any other M2 students who wish to learn more about the Des Moines M3 clinical training year option, but were unable to join the bus trip.

The lunch to discuss the M3 clinical training year in Des Moines option will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2011 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm in Room 2189 in the MERF Building. I will be present and will provide a brief video tour and discussion about the year in Des Moines. I will also have several current M3 students who are completing their M3 year in Des Moines present to share their observations and to answer any questions you may have about Des Moines clinical training.

We will serve lunch at the meeting so we need to get an accurate head count of those who wish to attend the lunch meeting. Please RSVP to Consortium secretary Wendi Kruger either by email (krugerwl@ihs.org) or by phone (515-241-4455) if you would like to attend the lunch meeting.

Community Recognition Awards Nominations

Hi Fellow Beans,

The time has come to recognize our upperclassmen and their contributions to the William Bean Learning Community. We are requesting nominations for the Community Recognition Award for the 8th Annual Communities Awards Banquet and Reception on March 22nd, 2011 at 6:30pm.

Each year the learning communities sponsor an All-Communities Leadership Banquet to recognize individual M3/M4 student-leaders that have been actively involved in their community during their medical career.

We are asking you to nominate a fellow medical student who has shown a vested interest in the Bean Learning Community by actively participating and constantly improving community activities such as fundraising events, Shelter House dinners/events, leadership, etc.

Please submit a statement (~150 word document) that includes why you chose to nominate this student, their year in school, and their contributions to the Bean Community and CCOM. Are you interested in participating in a Spanish language proficiency program in the College of Medicine this spring?

If adequate interest is expressed, we will offer a series of 2 hour Sunday afternoon sessions. Advanced beginner/intermediate proficiency will be needed to participate in the program as we will be focusing on oral communication skills.

GOALS: In these sessions, we will work on mastering practical spoken Spanish in its cultural context. Our goal is to use the language strategically, to accomplish objectives and resolve conflicts, in culturally accurate circumstances using appropriate vocabulary. Class activities will help you to:

develop the ability to maintain a conversation, handle common situations in Spanish and negotiate differences of opinion related to general life and medical situations.

Group Scenarios: There will be a scenario per class that will be assigned in advance with the goal of you becoming familiar with the material before you enter the room. This will allow us to converse more spontaneously rather than merely repeating written dialogue from the textbook only.

Comprehension of videos/ internet clips: These may be assigned in class, individually or small groups. There may be videos/music/internet clips assigned as homework.

We will offer 5 weekly sessions. The first session will be held on Sunday, March 27 and the last on May 1. Sessions will be held 2:00-4:00 in MERF. There will be no class on April 24.

Participants need to commit to participate in a minimum of 4 sessions in order to enroll. There is no fee for the program.

This program is limited to UI medical students.

Volunteers: Health and Nutrition Family/Child Session

The Elementary After School Program is holding the first Family Session and inviting all the elementary schools that were involved. Harb is asking for volunteers for this event as we will be managing approximately 100 children and 100 parents. The entire Iowa Children's Museum is rented out for this activity and we have the College of Public health and College of Medicine students involved.

For the parents we have 3 expert speakers, and for the children we have several activity stations such as yoga, rock climbing. Dinner will be included for participants (not volunteers). It will be a massive undertaking and Harb needs as much help as he can get. Attached is the tentative flier and the schedule, you can tell me your preference but the positions can't be guaranteed.

I need at least 35 volunteers for this event. PLEASE email Harb at: harb-harb@uiowa.edu and let him know if you can volunteer. The event is Saturday, March 5th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at the Iowa Children's Museum in the Coral Ridge Mall.

Just a friendly reminder that the DVIP Bench Press is March 1st! Please help Boulware take 1st place in Community Olympics this year (we are currently in 2nd place)!

It is March 1st in the MERF atrium from 5-9 pm. Registration is $15 if you haven't already signed up. You can easily pay for it on your U-Bill (or with cash or check). AND for $15 you get a cool t-shirt gold or black (you get to choose color and size), dinner, personal satisfaction form showing off your "guns" while having fun as well as helping Boulware earn Community Olympics points! Dr. Davidson gives Presidential Lecture Sunday

This Sunday we have the opportunity to honor and support one of the College's premier faculty members, Beverly Davidson, who is delivering the 28th Annual Presidential Lecture at 3:30 p.m. in the Levitt Center for University Advancement. UI President Sally Mason's selection of Dr. Davidson to deliver the lecture recognizes her significant contributions to academic excellence at the university, and is a tribute to her reputation as a world renowned scientist.

In addition to Dr. Davidson's lecture titled "Genes as Medicine: Molecular Therapy Comes of Age," there will be a musical prelude by the Maia Quartet of the UI School of Music performing the first movement of Joseph Haydn's Quartet, Op. 20, No. 2. A reception will follow the lecture in the Wyrick Rotunda.

Dr. Davidson is the Roy J. Carver Biomedical Research Chair in Internal Medicine and Professor of Neurology, Molecular Physiology, and Biophysics. In addition, she is director of the UI Gene Transfer Vector Core and associate director of the Iowa Center for Gene Therapy. She is an internationally recognized expert on inherited diseases and gene therapy, and a leader in developing novel therapies for brain disorders. In her lecture, Professor Davidson will discuss her work and the status of the field of gene therapy.

The construction manager for the window project was in the office this morning explaining that the first floor entrance doors will be closed this Thursday through Wednesday of next week. The closure is necessary due to the span of windows they are currently working on and the crane that will be moving glass and steel. The snow is melting fast and spring is fast approaching, so we wanted to give you a quick prep course in wilderness medicine before the tents come out, stakes are flyin, and somebody loses an eye.

Dr. Buresh will be presenting some basics to wilderness medical care (sorry, no easy answers to the race), crisis management, and mass triage situations. EVERYONE IS INVITED! We want to make sure non-race participants will get fired up about doing the race next year and also get a chance to educate themselves in case a rabid Liger attacks, pins you beneath and boulder without food or water, and leaves you with nothing but a snorkel, an avocado, and a bobby pin.

The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) is now accepting applications for the 2011 Medical Student Summer Fellowship program, a 10-to-12 week laboratory experience designed to attract and motivate young, talented medical students to pursue a career in brain tumor research. Medical Student Summer Fellows spend their summer in a neuro-oncology laboratory, learning basic science research skills from experienced mentors. Each Summer Fellow will receive a $3,000 stipend, and is required to submit a report on their experience. Based on these reports, an "outstanding medical student" is selected to receive the annual ABTA Lucien Rubenstein Award. The recipient of the award, named in honor of Lucien J. Rubenstein, M.D., a professor of neuropathology at the University of Virginia and a world-renowned brain tumor research, will receive a $1,000 bonus. As part of our philanthropy efforts this season, Mobile Clinic has decided to partner with the National Marrow Donor Program® (NMDP) to host a marrow drive to add people (like you) to the NMDP Registry.

Mark your calendar for Feb 28- Mar 1 from 12:30-1:30pm in the MERF atrium.

Many people are in need of marrow transplants. There is currently a critical shortage of donors on the Registry—especially donors with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. By becoming a member of the Registry, you could be a match for a patient in critical need. You could be the one to save a life.

It's simple and easy to sign up:

Review the requirements below to confirm that you are eligible to join.
Bring your driver's license to the drive.
Bring the names, phone numbers, mailing addresses and e-mail addresses of two family members (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc.) or friends who do not live with you. The NMDP will contact these people only if you are identified as a potential match for a patient and we cannot reach you.

To join the Registry, all you need is to:
Ø Be between the ages of 18 and 60.
Ø Be willing to help any patient in need.
Ø Meet health requirements. These conditions would prevent you from joining the Registry:
o Most heart diseases
o Most cancers
o Chronic lung diseases
o Diabetes requiring insulin or diabetes-related health issues (such as kidney, heart or eye disease)
o Autoimmune disorders such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis
o HIV, or at risk for HIV
o Hepatitis, or at risk for Hepatitis
o Conditions affecting blood clotting or bleeding
o Have had an organ or marrow transplant
o Significant obesity

Thanks to Andrea Mulhausen and Morgan Fulmer for volunteering last Saturday- both the kids and their mothers enjoyed having them there! There was some reading, game playing (Connect Four), building with blocks, even a little dancing on Morgan's part:)

AND NOW: We're forming another group for this coming Saturday!! If you have some free time, PLEASE JOIN US!! (we're going from 10-noon again, just 2 short hours, but 2 good hours of interaction for the kids...)

I know that the time is coming to fill out your M4 schedules. For those who know they are interterested in Emergency Medicine as a specialty EMRA has provided an article that may provide some scheduling guidance:

From my perspective, the only Iowa-specific advice that I can give you is to schedule ALS in the first block if at all possible. It is totally worth it. But, if you can't swing it, it is not the end of the world.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

DVIP BENCH PRESS, McCowen's biggest event of the year, is right around the corner. Next Tuesday March 1st from 5-9pm to be exact.

We are still in need of volunteers from 5-9pm. Mainly from 7-9pm. We need volunteers to help keep track of registration and we really need help spotting participants. If we don't have spotters- people won't be able to lift. Please sign-up to help out. There are sign up sheets in the McCowen Community or you can email jenna-wald@uiowa.edu with what time you are able to volunteer.

As this is a McCowen event there are two things to keep in mind...

1. all McCowen community members should participate if able to- even if you only do one rep, it helps! It is only $15 for food, raffle prizes, and a shirt and it only takes around 15 minutes of your day. So take a break from studying and get a quick arm workout in then grab some free dinner. Medical school is all about science, right? That's true, but a healthy percentage of med students come from non-science backgrounds. Philosophy, art, English, education and foreign language majors, to name a few.

Opportunities do exist within one's medical education to pursue those interests. Many schools, including the Carver College of Medicine, offer four tracks, allowing students to get recognition for research, humanities, teaching and/or service. Recently, we sat down with a group of students and track directors to hear more about how tracks work and how they can benefit students.

The President of the URology INtErest group must be willing to lend an abundance of enthusiasm and energy to the organization and from whom the organization will receive top-priority among extracurricular commitments.

The President will create an agenda for all meetings, moderate meetings, and will ultimately be responsible for all undertakings of the group. Therefore he/she should keep advised and informed on all aspects of the group's programming, activities, and decision making.

The President will be the primary member responsible for presenting the Urology INtErest group views to the public. Any controversial issues directly involving the group should be addressed by the President.

The President acts as a liaison between the members of the Carver College of Medicine and external resources and organizations to assure that all events run smoothly and are successful. The President will report to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs for the Carver College of Medicine.

Vice President
The Vice President of the URology INtErest group shall work closely with the President for the common good of the group. The Vice President shall represent the URology INtErest group at official functions when the President is unavailable.

The Vice President shall be responsible for organizing the recruitment of members to the group.

The Vice President shall be responsible for keeping all members informed of meetings and activities, promoting all programs and projects, and documenting all URology INtErest group activities, as necessary.

Treasurer
The Treasurer of the URology INtErest group shall work to obtain funding for the organization. This officer will collaborate with the other officers to create the annual budget, collect receipts for group expenditures, request and distribute reimbursement checks, and monitor spending in general.
