All Communities Food Drive: the results are in!

A win for the Crisis Center!  Bean Mayor Amy Domeyer has this to say:

First, thank you so much to everyone who helped to make this year's food drive a success. The Crisis Center was thrilled when we dropped off the food and even more thrilled when we told them a check was headed their way. Here are the totals:

Pounds of food: 822
Money donated to Crisis Center: $522.82

What a success! Now for the results:
  • Bean Community: 358.5 lbs. and $162.32 for a total of 520.82 points
  • Boulware: 210 lbs. and $204.14 for a total of 414.14 points
  • McCowen: 85 lbs. and $146.11 for a total of 231.11
  • Flocks: 168.5 lbs. and $10.25 for a total of 178.75
It looks like the soup can trophy will stay in Bean. Boulware raised the most money and nearly edged in for the win and McCowen and Flocks made great comeback in the final hours. It took all of us to make such a large contribution. Great job.

Ways to spend your Thanksgiving break

Dr. Takacs has some ideas on how to spend your time over Thanksgiving (when you're not eating or traveling, that is):
I am sure you are all looking forward to the upcoming break you have. I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels. Keep an eye on the weather when you are gone – you never know if a Sunday snow storm could happen after Thanksgiving and affect your travel plans.

If you are looking for something to do over break, consider the following:
  1. The careers in medicine web site. http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/osac/counseling/cim.html
  2. Shadowing in the Emergency Room by contacting kelly-norton@uiowa.edu

[leopold-society-ob-gyn] labor and delivering shadowing opportunity this weekend

The Leopold Ob/Gyn Society wants you to know about some last-minute shadowing opportunities:
Only evening/night times are available this weekend. If you are interested, please email me as soon as possible.

The residents have asked that only one student shadow at a time. Please email me with a couple hour time slot you are interested in coming and I will make sure no one overlaps. Again, you do NOT need to sign up for the entire 12 hour shift. Just find a couple hours that work in your schedule.

Times are available:
Friday, Nov 20 @ 8pm - Saturday, Nov 21@ 8am
Saturday, Nov 21 @ 8pm - Sunday, Nov 22 @ 8am

You will report to the Labor and Delivery nursing desk (elevator I to 6th floor) and ask for the resident work room. You will probably have to introduce yourself to whichever resident is on service and just let them know you are a student who is shadowing for a couple hours. They will be able to show you where to change into scrubs, but wear shoes you don't mind getting a little messy. It's hard to know in advance what will be going on, but you could expect a couple women to be in active labor and maybe and emergent c-section if things are really crazy. Just be flexible and bring a book along to read just in case things are slow. The residents usually have a lot of notes to do in between deliveries so it's good if you can occupy yourself while they get work done.

If you're interested or have qusetions, email Eva at eva-patil@uiowa.edu.

M1s: Time to order your syllabus/coursepacks for next semester (deadline: Noon, November 25th)

For spring 2010 M1 students are given the option of purchasing a hard copy of the syllabus/coursepack for courses or downloading an electronic copy at no charge. Please note: unless you own a laptop and bring it with you to class, you will find having only an electronic copy of the coursepack of little or no benefit.

You must indicate your choices by accessing the web page identified below no later than Wednesday, November 25th at 11:00 am.

http://ocrme.healthcare.uiowa.edu/surveys/osac/2010/index_m1.php

Please note these exceptions:
  • All students will be provided a hard copy of the Neuroscience syllabus/coursepack and charged for it on their U-bill. The coursepack (approx. 150 pages) includes course introduction materials, the first week lecture handouts and the laboratory manual (necessary for all students). All lecture handouts after the first week will be provided in electronic form only; this is done so images protected by copyright that are essential for students' learning can be included in the handouts.
  • All students will be provided a hard copy of the Human Organ Systems laboratory manual and charged on their U-bill. The manual is approximately 75 pages and a hard copy is essential.
If you have any questions feel free to contact hugh-hansen@uiowa.edu.

Last day for food drive!

Here’s your final update and last opportunity to put your community in the lead for the food drive. The totals are as follows:
  • Boulware- $133 and 3 large boxes of food
  • Bean- $79 and 5 bulging boxes of food
  • Flocks- $10 and 2 medium boxes of food
  • McCowen- $6 and about 15 food items
Remember $1 = 1 lb.

Boulware has more money but Bean has more food. McCowen and Flocks could pull an upset if everyone brought in a couple of cans. This could be a fight to the finish line!  Cash donations can be brought to Kathy Foss in the Bean office.

Don’t forget, you have until 12:00 Friday, 11/20 to make final donations. Results will be sent out tomorrow after food is weighed at the Crisis Center. Good luck to all and may the best community win!

Influenza vaccination update from Student Health

Here is an update from Lisa James, director of student health below. Some students who were unable to get he seasonal vaccine due to supply issues had enquired about availability – so as you can see below there are some shots available now. For more information on other forms of the vaccine and H1N1 vaccine prioritization please go to the SHS website:  http://studenthealth.uiowa.edu/

We just got a supply of injectable SEASONAL flu vaccine in- 300 doses, so not a lot, but if there are any students who still need it, they can come on over. We still have our walk-in clinic going through 4:30 on Friday, 11/20. We’ll be open next week M-T-W 8-4:30 and should be able to handle anyone who wants to come over, on a walk-in basis.

No real change in the H1N1 priority groups at this point, and it is all current on the website.

Important Spring 2010 Info from the Registrar

Here are important announcements related to your upcoming registration for Spring semester 2010.
  1. Please be sure you are up to date in paying your U-bill by December 4. Having your U-bill paid will avoid having a restriction placed on your registration and a late registration fee that can be as much as $100. To check your U-bill go to http://isis.uiowa.edu.
  2. Please take care of Student Health Service requirements by December 4. If you have not already done so, this is a reminder to take care of your Student Health screening requirements so you can be registered for spring semester. This will avoid having a restriction placed on your registration and a late registration fee that can be as much as $100. You received a letter in September indicating what requirements you have not met. If you did not receive such a letter, you may disregard this part of the announcement because you have presumably satisfied the Student Health requirements.  Student Health Service has walk-in clinics this week. No appointment is needed; just go to Student Health Service in the Westlawn Building between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm. Any required vaccination, tuberculin skin test or blood tests can be done but you will have to make an appointment if you need a physical. Please note that tuberculin skin tests cannot be placed on Thursdays. Please call (319) 335-8394 for an appointment. Please see the Student Health Service website for more information about health requirements and the walk-in clinics: http://www.uiowa.edu/~shs/clinical_services/immunizations.shtml You may send questions to student-health@uiowa.edu.
  3. You must be registered to receive Spring semester financial aid and to begin classes or clerkships. If you are not registered you may not attend class or have any patient contact.
Spring semester financial aid excess funds disbursements are anticipated about 2 days after the start of your semester for those who have complied with the requirements above and who have an official registration.
Thanks for your attention to these important requirements and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

"Grape" protection for arteries

Grape polyphenols induce multiple favorable changes in endothelial cell phenotype that impact cardiovascular risk. These polyphenols may reduce atherosclerosis by a number of mechanisms including improvement of endothelial function. Therefore, regularly eating grapes, especially red grapes, helps to blunt the acute insult to endothelium caused by a typical, Western high-fat meal.

Food Drive Reminder!!!

Please bring items to the food drive before it ends on Friday! We had great support on the week-end from shoppers at Hy-Vee, but now we Flocksters need to add to the donations.

In the past few days, local news stations have reported more hungry people in Iowa than in previous years, so please bring in a few items or donate cash. Alternately, consider donating a few items from your own cupboard to benefit the Crises Center. (Oh! This is a competition and Flocks is currently in 3rd place…so let’s donate and put Flocks at the head of the Communities!)

Beans: we need to pick up our food drive pace!

Okay, Beans, we’ve got a tradition to uphold: winning the food drive competition!

We had 4 great volunteers at HyVee on Sunday, and they got us started. Now it’s OUR turn to pick up the momentum and forge ahead. Our Boulware neighbors are doing a really good job, and Flocks and McCowen are going to get their act together, so...

we need to do a GREAT job! EACH ONE, BRING ONE: large can of food or $.

Clean out that cupboard or that pocket.  The REAL winner: the Crisis Center! Thanks for keeping us proud!

Please contact Saba Rasheed Ali, Associate Professor, Counseling Psychology (335-5495) if you are interested. This is a collaborative project including CCOM, Hardin Library, UI College of Education, and other UI health care colleges.

The health science students will help them complete this task.

  • Dec. 17 (Thursday), and

How to complete all your required clerkships in Des Moines

Dear Current Members of the UICCOM M2 Class:

We wanted to share information with you about an opportunity that will be made available to 24 members of your class during the 2010-2011 academic year. The College of Medicine has a branch campus in Des Moines, that has been providing clinical education to third and fourth year medical students of the College for over 30 years.

For the first time, during the current academic year (2009-2010), a limited number of UICCOM students were provided an opportunity to complete all of their required clerkships in Des Moines. Eleven current M3 students are completing 40 weeks of required clerkships in Des Moines this year.

We are now ready to expand this program and can accommodate up to 24 students from your class during the 2010-2011 academic year. There will be 44 weeks of required clerkships that can be completed in Des Moines in 2010-2011. Students can complete 40-44 weeks of third-year clerkships in Des Moines, which would allow students to complete an additional 4-8 weeks of clinical training in Iowa City.

More information is available about the Des Moines branch campus and details about the clinical training year available in Des Moines. We are presenting this information to you now so that you can learn more about the Des Moines clinical training option prior to the class meeting to discuss clinical clerkship scheduling that will be conducted in the spring (on March 8, 2010).

The Des Moines branch campus staff would welcome any inquiries (phone or email) and invites any interested students to visit the Des Moines campus prior to next spring. Visits can be arranged on weekends or even over the holiday break to learn more about the educational facilities, housing and training opportunities provided to students in Des Moines. You can also visit www.dmconsortium.org to learn more about the Consortium and to contact Consortium staff if you have questions or want to schedule a visit.

All of the 11 students currently completing M3 clinical training in Des Moines have indicated that they would be willing to visit with any student wanting to learn more about the Des Moines experience. (See your email for a copy of the attached, which contains the list of students willing to talk).

Changes coming to CCOM buildings' unlocked hours

Effective Monday, November 30, 2009, all Carver College of Medicine buildings on the west campus will change hours of public access. We have decided to standardize the times our buildings are accessible, in part, to protect our employees and University property. All entrance doors to CCOM buildings will be opened at 7:00 AM and will automatically lock down at 6:00 PM each weekday. All buildings will remain locked down from 6:00 PM on Fridays and reopen Monday mornings at 7:00 AM. Holidays will follow the weekend schedule. Card access will continue to be required when buildings are locked down. Internal doors into a specific work space, such as a suite of offices or laboratory, may be opened or locked at different hours, based on the normal work schedules for each specific area.

We ask for your cooperation in this effort. Toward this end we provide the following guidelines related to access control:
  • You should always display your ID; this common practice is for everyone’s benefit, it demonstrates your right to be here.
  • If you see any suspicious activity please contact University Police at (335-5022) immediately and let them verify the identity of the person. DO NOT PUT YOURSELF AT RISK UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
  • Never allow anyone to “tailgate” (this occurs when you swipe your ID or proximity card and someone follows you through the door).
  • If you are leaving a controlled access area and someone is waiting on the other side of the door for you to pass through so they can come through, please ask them to use their access card.
  • Never let someone else use your ID to gain access to a controlled area.
  • If your ID is lost or stolen after normal business hours notify University Police as soon as you realize your ID is missing. During normal business hours contact your department administrator or if you are a student please contact Office of Student Affairs and Curriculum.
  • Do not prop doors open or interfere with door closure devices.
  • If a door does not close as you pass through, please make sure it is latched and report the malfunction to CCOM Facilities Planning and Management at your earliest convenience.
  • There are occasions when we will program perimeter doors to be accessible in order to accommodate collegiate or university functions during the off hours. In those cases we require someone from the requesting unit to monitor the doors for security reasons and access for these activities must be made in advance through CCOM Facilities Planning and Management (L191 MERF).
This action will affect all CCOM buildings on the west campus. The Multi-tenant Facility at Oakdale will continue its current hours. Please direct any questions/concerns by phone to 335-8061 or 335-7248. Thank you.

MSCC library transitioning to electronic check-out system; all books recalled to prepare

For Real! No Doubt About it! It’s a major book recall!

During this year’s upcoming winter break, the MSCC Library will transition from pen and paper check out/check in system to an electronic system. This is the ultimate, critical time to go through this transition. And it can not be accomplished with out your cooperation!

Winter Break for M1s and M2s begins December 18, 2009 and ends January 11, 2010.  Third and fourth year students’ clerkships end December 12th and resume January 4th. All books that are the property of the MSCC Library are to be returned no later than the end of the day on December 18th - if not before. The sooner the better, of course.

At some point, a list of the Library’s holdings will be viewable through either ICON or the MSCC website.

Boulware T-shirts, and volunteers needed for Communities Food Drive

  1. Remember, if you want a Boulware T-shirt, they are $10 and you can grab a form to get one on the counter in Boulware. Fill that out and put it in Will Schouten's mailbox with the money by 1pm on Friday.
  2. VERY IMPORTANT: I still need 2-3 volunteers for the HyVee Dodge Street for this Sunday from 1-2pm to collect food for the All-Communities Food Drive. Please email me if you can help out, remember it's only an hour, you're going to be helping a ton of people, and whatever food you collect helps Boulware in the Food Drive standings against the other communities.
  3. To that end, remember that the Food Drive is all next week so if you are unable to help out on Sunday, please remember while you're shopping this upcoming weekend to pick up a few extra food items and bring them to Boulware next week. We will have a box out that you can put the food in.

If you missed today's Boulware meeting....

A ton went on today at the Boulware meeting, thanks to a great presentation by Kim Merchant and her crew from the College of Public Health. Here's a couple of reminders from the meeting:
  1. We have ONE spot open at HyVee Waterfront and THREE spots open for volunteering at HyVee Dodge Street for this upcoming Sunday. We only need to volunteer at these locations from 1-2pm this Sunday, Nov 15th and collect food donations. Please email me ASAP if you are able to take one of the four remaining openings for volunteering.
  2. If you are interested in getting a Boulware T-Shirt, come to Boulware, pick up a T-shirt form on the counter and turn it into Will Schouten's mailbox by 1pm this Friday, Nov 13th. A picture of the T-shirt is sitting on the counter.
  3. Please, please, please, if you are able to bake some goodies for Mon, Nov 16th for a Bake Sale that we are holding to raise money for the T2T key that we lost. A number of you signed up at the meeting and thanks, but we still need more. If you are able to bake some goods and bring them to Boulware around 8:15am on Mon, that would be great. Email me if you can make some goodies and what you'd like to make. Thanks!
  4. Remember next week (all week long) if you aren't able to volunteer this Sunday, we are holding a Food Drive in Boulware. Bring some canned foods along (heavy ones preferably) to help Boulware beat the other communities in this contest.

Bean meeting and refrigerator clean up, 11/10

Bean Community's next monthly community meeting is Tuesday, 11/10, from 12:30-1:30.  We will be serving taco plates (beef or black bean) and will be making construction paper turkeys to decorate the windows.  We hope you are able to join us and hear what's new for November in Bean Community.

If you have anything in the refrigerator that you don't want to find in the trash can, please mark your name and a date on it by tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.  If you have anything in the refrigerator that does belong in the trash can, well, you know what to do.  Padget kindly volunteered to de-clutter our very messy fridge so please help to make her job a bit easier.
Lastly, I want to send a special thank you to those who helped serve the dinner at Shelter House on Sunday.  We had a great turnout with tons of food.  Needless to say, Shelter House was glad to accept both the dinner and the leftovers.  If you are interested in helping serve at a future dinner and want more information, email myself or Abi Struck-Marcell (abigail-struck-marcell@uiowa.edu).  There are plenty of opportunities throughout the year and we'd love to see all of your friendly faces.

That's all for now.
Until soon,
Amy Domeyer
